Manga Review: Spice & Wolf Vol. 1

Damian Trypp here.

Been waiting a little bit to post this one because by the time I got to its review I needed to reread it. I actually have a couple of books reviews coming out over the next few days so keep a look out guys and gals. Keep bundled up and stay warm out there it’s cold and this guy is going settle down to a good book and a cup of fresh hot chocolate.

Summary

With his carthorse as his only companion, young merchant Kraft Lawrence slowly wends his way through dusty back roads in search of a profitable trade. But this monotony screeches to a halt when, one night, he encounters a harvest goddess in the guise of a beautiful young girl. . .with Wolf ears and a tail! Longing for the northern lands of her birth, Holo the Wisewolf joins Lawrence as he follows the ebb and flow of trade through the countryside. And when the two come across a compelling but suspicious opportunity for profit, will Lawrence with his mercantile chops and Holo with her ancient instincts be able to separate truth from lies–and make some coin while they’re at it?!

Review

Rating: 4.5

This manga has a sort of down home and slice of life type of vibe which isn’t bad. What it lacks in action it makes up for in magic and mystery with the two main characters getting along so well with their “you scratch my back I’ll scratch yours” type of attitude. Plus who doesn’t like a character with fuzzy ears? You get some ins and outs of trading, and learn how some markets work when it comes to the value of a coin, or tricks of the trade that both Lawrence and Holidays have picked up in their time before stumbling upon each other. It is rated Mature but there’s nothing super graphic, just a character who might not quite understand the concept of clothes right away.
