Manga Review: My Hero Academia Vol 17

Hey all, Dani here.

We will FINALLY be getting internet tomorrow. I am so excited. On the other hand, I’ve read like 10 books in the past couple weeks, so that’s nice. Anyway, today I’m reviewing another volume of a superhero series both Damian and I really enjoy. It’s Manga Monday with the next review for My Hero Academia.

Book Details

Story and Art: Kohei Horikoshi

Summary

Midoriya inherits the superpower of the world’s greatest hero, but greatness won’t come easy.

What would the world be like if 80 percent of the population manifested superpowers called “Quirks”? Heroes and villains would be battling it out everywhere! Being a hero would mean learning to use your power, but where would you go to study? The Hero Academy of course! But what would you do if you were one of the 20 percent who were born Quirkless?

The raid on the Hassaikai gang is in full swing, and the heroes plunge into the darkness toward their ultimate confrontation. Lemillion engages Overhaul in an attempt to rescue Eri, and the battle reaches a new level of intensity. Midoriya is desperate to help his mentor, but what fate has Nighteye foreseen for them all in this clash? And does the key to Midoriya’s survival lie in Eri herself?

My Thoughts

Rating: 5 stars

I read this as part of Manga Madness Readathon (Round 5) earlier this year, and this may be my favorite volume thus far. When I finished reading it I didn’t know what to say or how to react. I pretty much had to shove it towards Damian and tell him that he needed to read it ASAP because I wasn’t going to be able to keep it all to myself.

I was just shocked and impressed and in awe of everything that happened between the covers of this volume. And with the way that it ended…the wait for Volume 18 was a bit difficult–and my review for Vol 18 will be coming in a couple weeks.

There was so much action and emotion going on with these particular plot lines during the raid on the Hassaikai gang. The Lemillion and Overhaul encounter was insanely intense. And getting more insight from Nighteye’s visions of the future was definitely intriguing.

The fight sequences were absolutely stunning. I have to say that I am absolutely looking forward to seeing this in the anime. The determination and drive of so many of these characters is fantastic, and you can see why some of these heroes-in-training are definitely worthy to hold the title of hero. Their beliefs and motivations are just so understandable and you just want to see them succeed.

I still definitely love this series, and look forward to each volume’s release.
