Manga Review: My Hero Academia Vigilantes, Volume 4

Hey all, Dani here.

Greetings and happy Monday! I’m a bit tired today, after a pretty busy weekend at Ohayocon, but it was so worth it. Damian and I had a lovely time with Colorworld Books, and we’re basically using these convention experiences as training for if/when we decide to sign on to be a full-time team working the con circuit. Overall it’s just a really fun time to go to a place filled with so many people who enjoy some of the same books and shows and movies that I do. Ohayocon was our first anime convention, but it will not be our last.

Speaking of anime, we are back to a new Manga Monday review post, and I have so many more of these posts planned out. I just need to write/prep them all. It’s a pretty long list though, so I’ll just get a few ready at a time.

Anyway, let’s jump into the review.

Summary

In a superpowered society, there is nothing ordinary about evil anymore. Heroes, trained and licensed to protect and defend the public against supervillains, stand above all the rest. Not everyone can be a hero, however, and there are those who would use their powers to serve the people without legal sanction. But do they fight for justice in the shadows, or for reasons known only to themselves? Whatever they fight for, they are called…vigilantes.

The sinister Hachisuka continues to haunt the Naruhata district, distributing the Quirk-boosting drug Trigger. Knuckleduster continues to track her and is closing in. Meanwhile, Pop Step receives an unexpected invitation to perform at the Marukane department store’s grand reopening. With Makoto helping out, it’s going to be nothing less than an all-out entertainment extravaganza! But that’s only if she can organize a disorganized group of performers in time for the show!

My Thoughts

Rating: 4 stars

This was a good installment. Not necessarily my favorite, but it continues to be a decently solid series. If I’m being honest I think that sometimes this series feels like it struggles under the pressure of its parent series and the timeline and parameters.

However, I can say that I like that we keep expanding more on the backstories of the main characters, and I especially love all of the inclusion of heroes and such from the main series; it really helps to tie everything together. I mean, yes, it is easier to deal with the new original characters over the pro heroes from the main series, but even with the difficulty of maintaining the timeline and the world building and the character backstories and such, I think this series deals okay with the criteria. Like I mentioned though, sometimes it does feel like it struggles with it.

Obviously though, this series takes place several years before Midoriya and all of them go to U.A. In some ways I like that; if we were to see any of the big main cast of students from the main series, I think they would basically be children in this one, which would be a bit interesting.

Also, the more I read about Aizawa, the more I think he’s becoming my favorite character. If they just wanted to have a series focused on the life of Aizawa/Eraser then I would totally read it.
