Hey all, Dani here.
Wow, April is over and we are now in the month of May. The Calendar Girls Springtime Whirl reading challenge is still going on, until May 11th, so there’s still plenty of time to challenge yourself to read some books with us.
Anyway, it is the first Monday of the Month and that means it is once again time for a Calendar Girls post.
Calendar Girls is a monthly blog event that was started by Flavia and Melanie, but is now being hosted by Katie and Adrienne. They are all wonderful ladies, and you should check out their lovely blogs. Okay, so Katie is still on a brief hiatus for a few months, so for right now Flavia, Adrienne and myself are all hosting Calendar Girls together.
Honestly Calendar Girls is a group effort and I feel like we have become a pretty good group of friends, so it makes sense that we can share in the responsibilities and pick up any slack should it happen. I’m happy to do my part to help keep this tradition going. So if you link back to Flavia, Adrienne, and me, we can keep track of all the book picks and posts each month. Thanks, everyone!
First, more about the Calendar Girls. It is designed to ignite bookish discussions among readers, and was inspired by the 1961 Neil Sedaka song, Calendar Girl.
Just like the song, each month has a different theme. Each blogger picks their favorite book from the theme, and on the first Monday of the month reveals their pick in a Calendar Girls post. Make sure to post back to the hostess’s post, and both Katie and Adrienne will make a master list for the month. The master lists allow everyone to see the other Calendar Girls’ picks and to pop on over to their blogs. Thus, we all get to chat about books and even make some new friends!
Oh, and you don’t have to identify as female to join the Calendar Girls. We welcome readers of all types. So if this sounds like fun for you, join us in all of the fun bookish conversations.
Finally, the April theme is…
World Turtle Day
Favorite Slow Burn of a Novel
I think this is a super fun theme, and I’m really excited to see what books everyone picks. Now this can be a slow burn in terms of romance or a slow burn as in the book was slow but just oh so good.
Thankfully with the amount of books I read on a regular basis I have found a good number that could be considered a slow burn, mostly from the epic fantasy side of things.
So what book have I selected as my pick for this month?
I struggled with choosing this time around. There are just so many wonderfully thick books out there. I do enjoy picking up massive tomes, though I understand people who don’t enjoy such lengthy reads.
But there is just something about Brandon Sanderson’s writing and his worldbuilding that keeps me utterly fascinated. His Stormlight Archive series is all massive books, 1300+ pages, and yet I am so absorbed with what I’m experiencing.
He knows exactly when to pause on one character’s story to jump to another. It is pretty much ultimate cliffhangers.
Plus he writes these humongous books pretty quickly. He puts out what seems like at least two big books a year. Frankly it makes some of the other fantasy authors who keep delaying writing and releasing books look not as good. Either that or Sanderson just has an ability to focus that they lack. I don’t know. I do know what it’s like to struggle with creative block, but I’m also not a professional on deadline, so I guess I don’t have a proper understanding of what it takes to consistently complete big books.
Anyway, I have to give my choice this month to a master storyteller, Brandon Sanderson.
That’s all from me for now, but I’ll be back soon with more bookish content.
