August Wrap-Up and September TBR

Hey all, Dani here.

August is over already, and I have been 30 years old for a whole month now. Wow, time just keeps passing by so quickly. Where is my ability to pause time for a bit so I can catch up on all of this reading I need to do? Anyway, August was a pretty productive month, so that was nice.

Of course, when it comes to looking back over the past month, it also shows me just how lazy I have been when it comes to reviews. Over the last few months I have read quite a few books, and yet have only written a handful of reviews. So I need to try and get some more of those prepped up for all of you.

Let’s start with everything I read in the month of August.

Game of Secrets by Kim Foster – 4 stars

Beyond a Darkened Shore by Jessica Leake – 5 stars

My Hero Academia, Vol 14 by Kohei Horikoshi – 5 stars

Dawn of the Arcana, Vol 1 by Rei Toma – 4 stars

Blue Exorcist, Vol 1 by Kazue Kato – 5 stars

Avatar: the Last Airbender: North and South Part One by Gene Luen Yang – 5 stars

Avatar: the Last Airbender: North and South Part Two by Gene Luen Yang – 5 stars

Avatar: the Last Airbender: North and South Part Three by Gene Luen Yang – 5 stars

Blue Exorcist, Vol 2 by Kazue Kato – 5 stars

Blue Exorcist, Vol 3 by Kazue Kato – 5 stars

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows – 5 stars

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken – 3.5 stars

Black Clover, Vol 1 by Yuki Tabata – 4.5 stars

I’m in the middle of reading a book right now. I was hoping to finish it before August ended but that didn’t happen. Still, I’m pretty happy with the number of books I read.

Next up is what I watched in the month of August. I started my month watching Legally Blond while finishing up a costume for Gen Con. It is still a cute and fun movie, and I give it 4 stars. Then we all sat in our hotel room and watched Monsters University, which obviously still gets 5 stars. My fiance and I finished watching Legend of Korra, which I give 5 stars to as well. Then we watched Ready Player One again, and I still have to give the movie 5 stars. I’ll do a multi-format review for the book, audiobook, and movie soon. After that I got to see the Disney movie Bolt for the first time, and I give it 4 stars. Next up was Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which gets 4 stars. Then it was time to watch the cuteness that was To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, which definitely gets 5 stars from me. After that I finally got to see the new-ish Goosebumps movie, which I liked and gave 4 stars to. At the very end of the month I managed to watch The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (4 stars), so I will try to have my review of both book and film up fairly soon.

We are still keeping up with Critical Role Campaign 2, and as always, I am finding the storylines and character development to be really interesting. We are also keeping up with the current season of My Hero Academia, because we are both obsessed with it. Finally we are continuing to try and get me all caught up on Fairy Tail, which is going to take a lot more hours. We’re only on the second season right now, but I am really enjoying it. Oh, and my fiance decided to start watching Black Clover as well. It is an interesting premise, but we are both annoyed by the gratingly loud voice of main character Asta. He really doesn’t have to yell everything, but he pretty much does.

Okay, that’s all for what I watched over the month, so now let’s jump into the book haul and OwlCrate unboxing portions of this post.

img_20180826_1117437242009488125.jpg

Fun fact…my September book haul is already looking a bit crazy, because my fiance and I went to both Barnes & Noble and Half-Price Books on September 2nd. The deals were just too good, you guys. I regret nothing…but I may need to try and do another book unhaul sometime soon, or at least a reorganization of my bookshelves.

The last portion of this post is the TBR, and as per usual, I should really spend a little time staring at my bookshelves before I try to write these. I need to go figure out what books I’m going to try and read this month. Hmm… Okay, so I think I’ve found a pretty decent list.

And that is all I have for you guys today. Did you have a nice reading month in August? What books are you hoping to read in September? Let’s talk books in the comments. As always, I’ll be back soon with more bookish content.

Mid Year Book Freakout Tag

Hey all, Dani here.

As we are at the halfway point of the year, this tag definitely seems appropriate to post up now. I was recently tagged by Katie from Never Not Reading, which is exciting because Katie is awesome, so you should definitely go check out her blog. Anyway, I’m happy to be doing this tag, especially right before I post up my top ten reads of 2018 so far post–which is coming next week.

Okay, the rules for this are simple: answer the prompts. That being said, let’s just get started.

Best Book You’ve Read so far in 2018

Man, this is such a spoiler for my upcoming post. Plus, I don’t like actually ranking my reads. But, if I have to give an answer, my choice is going to have to be Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi.

Best Sequel You’ve Read so far in 2018

I have to go with The Heart Forger by Rin Chupeco for this one. I am such a huge fan of this series, and I am prepared to beg for an early copy of the third book, because I need to know what happens next.

Most Anticipated Release for the Second Half of the Year

Hands down, this one goes to Access Restricted by Gregory Scott Katsoulis. It comes out at the end of August, a year after the first book. But I read the first book early thanks to getting an ARC at BookExpo, so my wait has been extra long, and the first book was my absolute top read of 2017, so I am ready to drop everything else I’m reading to dedicate myself to this release as soon as I have it in my hands.

DirectIngest,

Biggest Disappointment

Oooh…um, well, I think I’m going to pick two different books for this one, sadly. Those books are Ship It by Britta Lundin and The Unbinding of Mary Reade by Miriam McNamara.

Biggest Surprise

I guess this prompt is going to Dread Nation by Justina Ireland. The concept sounded interesting, but the fact is that I’m still not really a fan of zombies in books/TV shows/movies. So this book ended up being an absolute favorite read of mine and I’m glad I just decided to dive in and see what happens.

Favorite New Author (or new to you)

There have been so many new to me authors this year. For this one, I think I’m going to have to say either Claire Legrand or A.C. Gaughen. I absolutely loved both Furyborn by Legrand, and Reign the Earth by Gaughen.

Newest Fictional Crush

My fiance might take offense to this one. Actually, I jest, because he has known since the beginning of our relationship that I would always have new book boyfriends or book girlfriends popping up into my life. Fictional crushes are totally fine in our relationships. No judgment. Okay, so I haven’t really had many crushes this year, but I will say Eamon O’Brien from Now A Major Motion Picture by Cori McCarthy is probably the closest to being considered a crush.

Newest Favorite Character

Some of these are tough. In the interest of talking about more books in this post, I try not to pick something for more than one category, so for this I’m going to pick Cameron from Chaotic Good by Whitney Gardner.

Book That Made You Cry and Book That Made You Happy

Without a question, both of these go to the Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins comic series. I read issues #4-6 in 2018, and these characters will always make me super emotional. I have followed their adventures for a few years now, and I have posters for them in my apartment, and so so many Critical Role t-shirts. So yeah, I’m a huge fan.

Favorite Book to Film Adaptation

In 2018, definitely Love, Simon. I thought that the book was good but not as amazing as the hype made it sound, but I absolutely adored the movie.

Favorite Post You’ve Done This Year

This is a hard one. Most of my posts are wrap-ups or reviews. Well, I guess I’ll go with the Bookish Academy Awards post. I have a lot of fun going through my previous year’s reads, and selecting the winners for each category.

Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year

Hmm…I’d have to say the special hardcover release of Hounded by Kevin Hearne. Subterranean Press is doing a limited run special edition for the whole series. I pre-ordered this last year technically, but it just arrived in the mail a week or so ago, so I’m going to count it as a 2018 purchase. They should be doing the pre-order for book two very soon.

New Release You Haven’t Read Yet But Want To

There are so many books that fit this one. I’ll just choose a few.

Book You Need to Read by the End of the Year

So very many books. Have you seen my book hauls and TBRs? I need more time to read all the books. Obviously all of the books I mentioned in the last prompt, plus…I guess I’ll just toss these ones in as well.

If you have not yet done this post, then consider yourself TAGGED. I’d love to see what your Mid Year Book Freakouts look like. That’s all for today, and I’ll be back soon with more bookish content.

Sunshine Blogger Award (6)

Hey all, Dani here.

I can’t believe that I’ve been nominated again for this award. Seriously, thank you all so much for enjoying my blog and feeling that I am worthy of being nominated. This time around, my nomination comes from Jenna over at Bookmark Your Thoughts, so please go and check out her blog because she is awesome.

WHAT IS THE SUNSHINE BLOGGER AWARD?

The Sunshine Blogger Award is given to those who are creative, positive and inspiring, while spreading sunshine to the blogging community.

THE RULES

  1. Thank the person/persons that nominated you and link back to their blog.
  2. Answer the 11 questions your nominator has given you.
  3. Nominate 11 other people and give them 11 new questions to answer.
  4. List the rules and display the award.

QUESTIONS I WAS ASKED

  1. What made you want to start a book blog?

So, I just really like talking about books, and I didn’t really have any big book people around me at home/work and I needed an outlet. Plus, I’ve had blogs before and while I didn’t really have a big follower count or anything (I had 7 followers) and pretty much no commenters, I just enjoyed writing about books. And since this blog I’ve gone to book conventions and I’ve talked with so many of you wonderful people, so I’m glad I decided to try again with book blogging.

  2. Tell us one thing about yourself that you probably haven’t shared in your posts.

Oh man…umm…see, you guys already know that I’m a reader, a blogger, an author, a geek, and I have mentioned my love of making cupcakes on here before too. Gosh, what can I tell you about me?

  3. Name three books releasing this year that you’re most excited for.

So this one isn’t that difficult really: Access Restricted by Gregory Scott Katsoulis (Release Date: August 28th) is my absolute most anticipated book of the year. I’m also really excited for the release of The Emerald Sea by Richelle Mead (Release Date: June 26th). For a third release I’m anticipating, I guess I have to go with Smoke and Iron by Rachel Caine (Release Date: July 3rd), though I’m also excited for The Towering Sky by Katharine McGee (Release Date: August 28th). Yay, bonus book!

  4. Name three movies releasing this year that you’re most excited for.

Oooh…three movies…okay, so Incredibles 2, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. But I’m also excited for Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2, Aquaman, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Mary Poppins Returns.

  5. Shout out three bloggers you’ve recently started following.

Yikes, I’ve been bad about following bloggers lately. Because of my hectic schedule at the moment, it has been difficult to even keep up with everyone I’m following already. I’ll just go with the first three that pop up in my reader feed: Flavia at Flavia the Bibliophile, Paige at Just One More Pa(i)ge, and Brittany at Perfectly Tolerable.

  6. What’s your favourite read of 2018 so far?

I feel like this question is a spoiler for my upcoming top reads of 2018 (part one) post, but I also can’t pick just one, so here’s three:

  7. Rewatching movies and TV shows: Yes or no?

Yes, absolutely. I see things I missed with each rewatch, so I like the experience. It’s like rereading books.

  8. What’s your spirit animal?

Probably something feline in nature…my fiance says housecat, but get on my bad side and probably more like a lion.

  9. Name two pointers you have for book bloggers in regards to writing reviews.

Don’t give a play by play of the contents of the plot. A lot of those who would read the review probably haven’t read the book yet and most likely don’t want those spoilers.
Also, it is perfectly fine and acceptable to gush, squee, fangirl/fanboy, rage, etc in your review. We want to know what you liked, what you loved, what bothered you. We just (well, I just) would prefer for these emotive exclamations to be non-spoilery.

  10. Introvert | Ambivert | Extrovert: which best describes you?

I’m a pretty extroverted introvert, so technically I guess I would be an ambivert.

  11. Name one thing you are grateful for.

I am so incredibly grateful for my fiance. He came into my life at the perfect time, right as my home life was about to implode. Without him, 2017 would have been so much worse for me, so I am so so lucky to have him in my life.

MY NOMINEES

Well, since I already tagged them earlier in this post, I suppose I’ll go ahead and nominate those three lovely bloggers for this.

– Flavia at Flavia the Bibliophile
– Paige at Just One More Pa(i)ge
– Brittany at Perfectly Tolerable
– Kathy at Books & Munches
– Alyssa at A Reader’s Journey
– Holly at Nut Free Nerd
– Katie at Never Not Reading
– Sofii at A Book. A Thought.
– Jenna at J.K. I’m Exploring!
– Krista and Dawlyn at Little Blind Book Finds
– You!

MY QUESTIONS

Jenna’s questions were so interesting, so I will shamelessly just take them and give them to you lovely nominees.

  1. What made you want to start a book blog?
  2. Tell us one thing about yourself that you probably haven’t shared in your posts.
  3. Name three books releasing this year that you’re most excited for.
  4. Name three movies releasing this year that you’re most excited for.
  5. Shout out three bloggers you’ve recently started following.
  6. What’s your favourite read of 2018 so far?
  7. Rewatching movies and TV shows: Yes or no?
  8. What’s your spirit animal?
  9. Name two pointers you have for book bloggers in regards to writing reviews.
  10. Introvert | Ambivert | Extrovert: which best describes you?
  11. Name one thing you are grateful for.

All right, well that is all for today. Thanks for reading, and I’ll be back soon with more bookish content.
